According to my own experience, there are several possible causes for why a computer runs slowly as time goes. Sometimes, there might be not enough space in the hard disk as it accumulates data and stores them all. And in some cases, it might be caused due to a virus infection or some useless left-over programs. I think no matter what the cause, here I will show you how to do when finding the computer is slow.

speed up computer

When your computer suddenly runs slow, you have to make sure that the computer is virus clean. As what I have said before, virus infection is one main cause of the computer boot error. There are not able to run without your permission, but also eat up a large a amount of system resources. When the computer cannot recall enough resources to boot up the PC, you won’t boot up computer correctly. Just check your antivirus software to see whether it is outdated or incompatible with your system. If so, it will make your computer start up abnormally or slower. Directly update your antivirus program to the latest version and run it a couple of times to make sure you don’t have a virus or malware existing on your machine.

To speed up your computer, secondly you have to make sure that the system does not automatically load too many unnecessary programs at starting up. If too many programs load at one time, you can image how slow it is just like running many programs / opening several websites at the same time. So it is necessary for you to go to Start -> Run ->type “msconfig” to access System Configuration Utility ->disable the programs that do not need to run at windows startup within the “Startup” tab.

Also, you’d better make sure the Windows is updated. The next step is to make sure that Windows and all drivers are up to date. This way, the computer can access all files it wants correctly as well as improve PC performance, avoiding some unexpected errors just like Microsoft visual c runtime error & computer will not shut down error. To update the Windows, you can simply follow the solutions here:

*Click “Start” > “All Programs” > “Windows Update”
*Download all available updates for your system
*Restart your PC

By the way, to update the hardware driver, directly download the available ones from the manufacturer’s website and install it on the computer.

After the three above steps, run a disk defragmentation job immediately. We all know that a fragmented hard disk will significantly make a computer sluggish for it always takes very longer time to reassemble all parts of the same files locate at a single place of the hard disk. So a regular disk defragmentation is needed when asking “my computer is slow and what can I do”. To accomplish it, you can go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tool -> Disk Defragmenter to begin the defragment process. If there are many hard disks, please defragment them one by one. But to enjoy faster defragment process, it is recommended that you can rely on a professional defrag program to defragment your computer.

Importantly, to fix a slow computer you should not miss to fix Windows registry errors. System registry plays a vital role on your computer to store all important settings and information. Both the computer and the hardware/software all need it to perform correctly. However, if it is not maintained properly, it will be full of some useless/invalid/broken entries, to make the computer slow desperately slowly. What’s more, viruses and spyware can also attack and remove some registry entries to make it easily unstable. A simple fix on the registry will make it clean, compact and easily to be accessed and then speed up computer.

To sum, every computer, old or new, can run slow gradually as time goes. And things will go much worse if the computer lacks of regular maintenance in daily usage. So, to prevent some problem just like “my computer is slow and what can I do”, I highly advise that you can perform the above listed tips while using the computer in daily life.
